Francesc Ramis Grimalt

ramisThe musician Frances Ramis Grimalt (1921.1993) is most popularly known for his carols.  Through out his career he wrote and composed more than 400 songs, but his contribution to music and culture is much wider.  After a childhood connected with music and at the Dominican school in Manacor, Francesc Ramis went on to study Philosophy and Theology  Domincans schools in  València i Salamanca

In the 50s, he was member of the popular musical groups "Mariland", Illa d'Or, the "Blue Star" orchestra or "Sixtar".  Songs such as "Porto Cristo" belong to this period.  At the same time he began working as a violinist at the "Coves del Drach".  In 1971, together with Mossèn Miquel Vallespir, he became the promoter of the "Concurs de Nadales de Porto Cristo" (The Porto Cristo Christmas Competition) where he was practically in charge of everything: he composed the music and lyrics, accompaniments, soloist preparation, groups etc

As well as composing many songs and carols, Frances Ramis, composed music to accompany poems from well-known poets such as Costa i Llobera and Maria Antònia Salvà.

As a recognition of his contribution to music and the training of many children in Porto Cristo, since July 2008, the "Plaça infantil" (the children's square) bears his name
